Students Sue Michigan over the Constitutional Right to Literacy

Alisa Hartz, an attorney with Public Counsel, will join us to talk about a class action lawsuit against the State of Michigan. It charges that the State holds Detroit low income students of color prisoner in rat-infested, unheated and dangerous schools, where they are denied their human right to literacy and knowledge of the world.

Escaped Slaves in the Great Dismal Swamp

Richard Grant joins us to talk about how escaped slaves found freedom deep in the Great Dismal Swamp. Recent archaeological discoveries have shown that escaped slaves built flourishing communities that lasted for ten generations. Richard Grant is an author, journalist and television host. He currently writes for Smithsonian magazine. His latest book is Dispatches From Pluto, Lost and Found in the Mississippi Delta.

"Birth of a Nation" and the Attacks on Nate Parker

Sunsara Taylor on "The Birth of a Nation" and the attacks on Nate Parker. Just before the major release of a new film, 'The Birth of a Nation,' which chronicles the heroic slave rebellion of Nat Turner, a huge controversy was manufactured over 17-year-old allegations of sexual assault directed against the film's writer, director and star, Nate Parker, despite the fact that he was tried and found not guilty years ago. What's up with this?

Sunsara Taylor is a writer for revcom.us and the key initiator of End Pornography and Patriarchy: The Enslavement and Degradation of Women (StopPatriarchy.org)
