Summary: Featured speakers/guests:
Steely Dan blended jazz harmonies, pop, and R&B with sophisticated studio production and cryptic lyrics, and enjoyed critical and commercial success in the 1970s and again after reuniting in the early 2000s. This week's KPB features some of the group's work, commemorating Steely Dan co-founder Walter Becker, who died in September 2017. Offsetting and complementing Steely Dan's sound are jazz performances by Pat Metheny and Brad Mehldau and by vocalists Tierney Sutton and Mel Torme. Other music comes straight from the 1960s pop charts, by Dionne Warwick and Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. Two last bits of contrast are provided by the Nashville Mandolin Ensemble and by a singer-songwriter who, like Steely Dan, enjoyed great chart success in the early 1970s, Cat Stevens.   Larry Kensington
