Criminal justice journalist JUSTIN GEORGE of The Marshall Project discusses his recent analysis of "Trump Justice, Year One: The Demolition Derby", in which he examines "nine ways Trump has transformed the landscape of criminal justice just one tumultuous year into his presidency." From their rhetoric and tone on crime, to the "drug war" and immigration, to policy changes on policing, mass incarceration, and the private prison industry, to stacking the federal bench with rightwingers and more, Team Trump is hoping to unwind many of the criminal justice reforms successfully enacted by President Obama, particularly in the later years of his final term. In Florida, encouraging news on voting rights: a citizen initiative to allow former felons to vote has officially qualified for the November ballot. Florida disqualifies more former felons (who are also disproportionately African-American) from voting in the Sunshine State for life than any other state in the U.S. Only Florida, Kentucky, Virginia, and Iowa ban such citizens from voting for life. Plus we look into a tale of dirty laundry, but with (mostly) good reason... |
