Summary: Featured speakers/guests:
On todays show, we once again attempt to squeeze a 10 pound show into a 1 pound bag: Hurricane Florence, downgraded to a Tropical Storm, is still wreaking extraordinary havoc, with record rainfall, storm surge and flooding. Donald Trump's former campaign chair, Paul Manafort, pleaded guilty in a deal to cooperate with Special Counsel Robert Mueller. An update on the natural gas explosions in dozens of homes north of Boston, MA. More on the widespread voting problems reported with voter registrations in the state and local primaries in New York on Thursday. Then Financial journalist David Dayen of The Intercept and The New Republic analyzes the reported results out of New York, where underdog progressive upstarts, like actress Cynthia Nixon and Fordham University law professor Zephyr Teachout, challenged two-term Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo and establishment Democrats. While Nixon and others ultimately did not succeed, they managed to force Cuomo and his party to the left on a number of important issues. Progressives did, however, succeed in the state senate, where 6 of 8 members of the so-called Independent Democratic Conference (corporate Democrats who caucused with Republicans, ensuring GOP control) were turfed out. As the primary season is finally now wrapped up, we discuss the various ways in which voters and diverse candidates have helped to redefine the Democratic Party over the past year. Dayen also explains how, even a decade later, no real accountability has ever been brought to the elite who caused the Great Recession and global financial meltdown, and the several ways in which the ramifications of the Wall Street bank bailouts still reverberate throughout the American body politic today. Plus: more details on nuclear plants currently threatened by the massive flooding of Florence, including reactors very similar to those that melted down in the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan...  Brad Friedman, David Dayen, Desi Doyen
