The use of labels is often at the root of deceit, ignorance, and confusion. Human beings have a troubling habit of placing a label on a group of people based on a common trait or traits. Then assigning particular characteristics to all individuals who we feel should be identified by that label. I believe that the concept of labeling, regardless of the designated group, is fundamentally flawed. It may have been useful thousands of years ago in a world of sharp teeth and claws but it has long outlived its usefulness for survival. We delude ourselves to believe that the labels which we hold emotional attachments to are accurate. Incredulously, we act surprised when people live their lives outside of our label expectations.....We act shocked and even offended when others don't act within the boundaries of the labels that we subscribe to. Even worse, we act as though there is something wrong with THEM!!!
