Last week we featured voices and testimony from the historic Save Our Schools Rally and March that took place in Washington D.C. in July. We now continue our coverage of this event with reports from the conference leading up to the rally and march. This conference brought together hundreds of teachers, education scholars, youth and activists from all over the country for two days of workshops and networking as a means to build a national movement to restore educator, parent, student, and community influence over education policy and practice.
For this week's program we feature several voices from the event - voices that relay, in the words of one of our interviewees, both stories of struggle and stories of hope. We hear from Michelle Fine, a faculty member at the CUNY Graduate Center in New York City about the complicated ways that education reform is playing out within several New York City schools. We hear from a Detroit public high school student organizer, Taybrian Joe, who led student walkouts to protest the city's school closings. And finally, we hear from Sabrina Stevens Shupe, a former Denver Public Schools teacher and the public relations coordinator for Save Our Schools who shares her story of being forced out of her teaching position for taking a stand against her principal's vision of school reform.
