What would Vincent Van Gogh and pop artist Roy Lichtenstein have in common. Well it's not that much of a stretch when you consider the current exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art featuring Claude Monet's classic series of his Rouen Cathedral paintings depicting progressive shades of light shining on the building.

It turns out Roy Lichtenstein did the same series almost 100 years later in his pop art dot style and they both currently sit in the Eli Broad Contemporary Art Museum for viewing.

In this program we not so much want to compare or contrast the painters, but hopefully give the listeners a glimpse at what help make these artists who they were.

We begin with an interview with Roy Lichtenstein, the artist known for his comic strip style. the interview is expertly conducted by Jeanne Siegel in December of 1967 or early January 1968 - early in Lichtenstein's career. As it turns out the artistic and architectural movements of the 1930's, in particular the Bauhaus, Cubist and Surrealist Movements were highly influential to his work.

In part two of our program we present a special Pacifica Station WBAI production.

In 1972 pacifcia station WBAI 99.5 fm in NCY took on a dramatic presentation of the personal correspondence of Vincent Van Gogh adapted from the Complete Letters of Vincent Van Gogh published by the New York Graphic Society in 1958. Produced by David Rapkin and adapted for the radio by Bonnie Bellow and Terry Shtog with musical direction by James Irsay. Here is a wonderful example of radio as an artistic medium, Mr. John Lithgow as Vincent Van Gogh.

Both of today's programs were just transferred from reel-to-reel tape that was rapidly deteriorating to a digital format. And we thank the National Endowment for the Arts and our Pacifica radio archives patrons and supporters for making it possible for us to rebroadcast these examples of art on the radio and radio art.
