On our weekly roundtable: The expected showdown at the 6th Summit of the Americas
due to start in Cartagena, Columbia on Friday. President Obama will be at the Summit
that will include thirty three of the thirty five leaders in the hemisphere.
Notably absent will be Raul Castro, who at the insistence of the US has been banned
from the Summit just as Fidel had been. The President of Ecuador is boycotting in
protest and Brazil is threatening that this will be their last Summit unless the ban on
Cuba is lifted.
Meanwhile, it is of interest to note that President Calderon of Mexico is at the moment
on the ground in Cuba.
As US influence in the region has diminished, President Obama is bound to be pressed
on the failed US policy on drugs; US and immigration and interventionist policies and on
US economic and other punitive policies on Cuba.
Panelists are: Mexico City based Laura Carlsen; Alex Main, Senior Associate for
International Policy at the Center for Economic and Policy Research and expert on US
foreign policy in Latin America and the Caribbean; on the ground in Havana Cuba, Dr.
Gerald Horne.
