Co-ops have always been part of the American landscape. In 1752, Benjamin Franklin initiated the first successful cooperative in America, "The Philadelphia Contributionship for the Insurance of Houses from Loss by Fire."
The Park Slope Food Coop in Brooklyn, New York City, was part of a wave of food coops that were started in the 1970's. Today, this left-over from the Counter Culture is one of very few remaining member-run food coops in the country. Central to its mission is making high-quality food affordable for ordinary people.
With approximately 14,000 members, Park Slope Food Coop continues an upward growth pattern and demonstrates a model for sustainable socially and environmentally conscious business.
Black explores the reasons for its success and explores this unique model of democracy in business. She also looks at the phenomenon of co-ops and the politics of food.
