Like many European countries at the beginning of the 20th Century, Portugal found itself challenged to find the best way to transition from monarchical rule to a form of Government that best represented the people.
It began with a Democracy from 1902 to 1926, until a military lead coup put an end to the Portuguese First Republic and ushered in a National dictatorship that would be called Estado Novo or New State.
Portugal would be lead by Atonio de Oliveira Salazar from 1933 until an illness in 1968 mad him transfer power to the only other leader of that era Marcelo Caetano. In that time Salazar set up a pro Catholic, conservative Capitalist government that reflected the other authoritarian governments of Franco's Spain, Mussolini's Italy and later Hitler's Germany.
Citizens of Portugal lived in fear of the secret police called PIDE. Tribunals were established that would imprison anyone who dissented. The worst were sent to the notorious Tarrafal prison located on the island of Cape Verde one of it's African colonies.
A majority of the remaining Portuguese citizens were forced to work for unlivable wages for wealthy land owners and businesses, the struggle of the people for freedom and democracy was reflected in the music.
This rein of terror would end beginning on April 25th 1974, the Beginning of the Carnation Revolution, A movement so strong that hardly a shot was fired as the authoritarian regime conceded power to the people of Portugal.
KPFA producer Alan Snitow weaves incredible stories about the music of Portugal that help tell the tale of almost a a half century of struggle that would end in freedom and democracy for the people of Portugal and the African people of former Portuguese colonies Angola, Guinea Mozambique and others. |
