RADMILLA CODY
Initiative Radio 2012 Black History Maker Award Recipient
Angela's guest Radmilla Cody is a Navajo born woman who is equally proud of both her Native Indian and Black heritage. Radmilla is a 2013 Grammy Award nominated singer, an anti-domestic violence advocate and in 1997 she became the 46th Miss Navajo Nation. She is the first and thus far only Miss Navajo who is Indian and Black. Winning the crown was a victory however it did not sit well with Navajo purists who believe that being part Black disqualified Radmilla from representing the Navajo people even though she speaks the language fluently and is highly skilled in Navjo cultural practices. Radmilla has overcome this type of discrimination and other obstacles along the way to achieve many victories including the release her 5th album "Shi Keyah" which has earned her place in Grammy Award history this week.
