Ava Leavell Haymon is a poet, playwright, and teacher. In June 2013 she was appointed State Poet Laureate of Louisiana. Her poems have appeared in many journals, in five chapbooks from independent small presses, and in four full collections "The Strict Economy of Fire, Kitchen Heat, Why the House Is Made of Gingerbread, and Eldest Daughter,all from LSU Press. Women s Voices for Change chose Why the House Is Made of Gingerbread as one of the ten best poetry books of 2010. Haymon teaches poetry writing in Louisiana and in New Mexico, where she directs a retreat center for writers and artists. She offers workshops and reads her poems widely in the United States and in Canada. She has performed often in collaborative concerts with musicians, dancers, actors, and other writers, and has written text for composers and dance companies. Both jazz and classical contemporary composers have set her poems to music.
A native of Boston and longtime resident of Louisiana, Julie Kane was the 2011-2013 Louisiana Poet Laureate. Her most recent poetry collections are Rhythm & Booze (2003), which was Maxine Kumin s selection for the National Poetry Series; Jazz Funeral (2009), which won the Donald Justice Poetry Prize; and Paper Bullets (2014), a new collection of light verse. She also wrote the libretto for Starship Paradise, a one-act opera with music by Dale Trumbore which was premiered in 2013 by Center City Opera Theater of Philadelphia. A former George Bennett Fellow in Writing at Phillips Exeter Academy and Fulbright Scholar to Vilnius Pedagogical University (Lithuania), Julie teaches at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, LA.
