The two-hour event aired live on Goldendale Community Radio and will be rebroadcast on Sat., March 26 at 6 PM on 100.1 FM in Goldendale.

The candidates event was hosted by Lyle School District and organized by Lyle School Superintendent and Principal, Andrew Kelly. Moderators for the event were Lyle High School students, Alex Pabon, Senior, Larissa McConville, Freshman, and Philip Kilan, Junior.

All four declared candidates remaining in the race for the Washington State Superintendent's seat attended the event in Lyle. They include: Robin Fleming, Erin Jones, Chris Reykdal, and Larry Seaquist.

Philip Kilan, Lyle High School Junior, student moderator, commented that, "The State Superintendent of Public Instruction is a critical position to our State. This non-partisan leadership role will position one of our four candidates that you will get to hear...in the essential position of becoming the advocate and voice for the 295 school districts in Washington State and the 1.1 million students who fill our schools."

Larissa McConville presented detailed biographical information about the candidates relevant to their candidacy. She highlighted the strengths and backgrounds of each one.

Robin Fleming served as a Health Service program administrator for OSPI. She has had thirteen years experience as a school nurse. Her educational background includes a PhD in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from the University of Washington with doctoral research in health and academic disparities.

Erin Jones has been an educator for 24 years. She received White House recognition for Most Innovative Foreign Language Teacher in 2007 while at Tacoma, and Washington State Teacher of the Year in 2008. She was also designated as a Champion for Change in 2013. Her work experience includes a four year stint at the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. She is the first Black woman to run for State office in Washington State.

Chris Reykdal from Snohomish, is serving a third term in the House of Representatives. He is vice-chair of the House Education Committee and serves on the House Higher Education Committee and Finance Committee. He has spent thirteen years working in the Community and Technical College system. He is also a former classroom teacher.

Larry Sequist, resident of Gig Harbor, served four terms in the Washington House of Representatives, chairing the Higher Education Committee and serving on Appropriations, Education, Early Learning and Health Care Committee. He has a prior 32 year Navy career in which he commanded four war ships in operations around the world. Also, he has been a Brookings Institution Fellow, and senior strategist and budget leader at the Pentagon. Sequist also served as a consultant to UNESCO in Paris.

Each candidate had the opportunity for introductory and closing statements before responding to questions from the audience. The event was well-attended, crowd size estimated at about 75.

Chris Reykdal commented that although the candidates have appeared at other such events during this election cycle, primarily they addressed professional educators. From his and the other participants' comments, the Lyle School District hosted event was the first such forum with a wider community focus that clearly outlined the choice for voters in filling the State Superintendent seat this election.
