Let's stay in Argentina but move back about 300 years. In 1717 Domenico Zipoli was a 29-year-old Italian composer who had already made a name for himself in his native land. Zipoli was a profoundly religious person and decided to emigrate to the New World to help convert the indigenous people to the Catholic faith. His group arrived in Buenos Aires in the middle of July and then proceeded on to Crdoba.

Most of the music that Zipoli wrote in South America has been lost due to the action of rodents and humidity typical of fluvial regions and also illicit appropriation. The Mass in F discovered in the archives of the Sucre Cathedral lacks the traditional Benedictus and the Agnus Dei. It is possible that the composer omitted those sections on purpose but it's more likely that they were lost for some reason. It was clearly dedicated to one of the mission villages. The absence of basses can be explained by the fact that none were available. The same may be true of the limitation of strings to first and second violins and the presence of the organ and basso continuo. That does result in a certain transparency, which you can hear in this interpretation by the Cantora of the Baslica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Argentina under the direction of Monsignor Jess Gabriel Segade.

The Romero family has been playing guitar together in public since 1960, not long after they escaped from Franco's regime in Spain in 1957 and moved to San Diego. Their discography is impressive - I found over 100 CDs available on Amazon.com, not to mention the many phonograph records and other recordings that have since gone out of print. When Angel left the quartet in 1990 and was replaced by Celin's son Celino, the group included three generations of Romeros at the same time. That continued until Celedonio's death in 1996, when he was replaced by Angel's son Lito. To have so many virtuosos of the same instrument in the same family is unique in the music world, and in the world of the classical guitar it's totally without precedent. Let's listen to a performance by Angel of a work by his father Celedonio called "Tango Angelita".

================================ HOUR 2 ===================================

Welcome back to "Classical Tones" from the Studios of KBBF in Santa Rosa California. All the music has some connection to Spain or Latin America.

No program of classical music would be complete without a work of Beethoven's. We'll hear his Piano Concerto number 5 in E flat. This concerto, known as "The Emperor" was actually written for the Archduke Rudolf of Austria. The name is nonetheless fitting for this work of expansive proportions and powerful character.

The soloist in this recording is the Chilean pianist Claudio Arrau, considered by many one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. He was a child prodigy, giving his first concert when he was 6 years old. At the age of 8 he was sent on a 10-year-long grant from the Chilean government to study in Germany. By age 11 he could play Liszt's Transcendental Etudes, one of the most difficult sets of works ever written for the piano. He has performed works by all the great composers in a long career that lasted until his death in 1991 at the age of 88. He is accompanied here by the Dresden State Orchestra under the baton of Sir Colin Davis.

Ahora escuchemos msica contempornea.

Now let's listen to some contemporary music. Carlos Franzetti is an Argentinian pianist and composer who has won 5 Latin Grammy awards. As a young composer in the 70s and 80s, writing tonal music, he felt quite isolated since the trend in those days was to follow the path then in fashion of post-serialism and the aleatoric extremism of chance writing. However in later conversations with Astor Piazzolla and Carlos Guastavino they corroborated that they felt the same way. Franzetti's "Aubade for Chorus and Orchestra", composed in 1985, is a symphonic prelude written for a play by Mauger de la Branniere. We'll hear the Orchestra and Chorus of the City of Buenos Aires conducted by the composer.
