Desde hace muchos aos el director de orquesta y pianista mexicano Enrique Btiz ha sido el Director de la Orquesta Sinfnica del Estado de Mxico. La sala de conciertos de la orquesta lleva el nombre de Felipe Villanueva, un compositor mexicano de la era romntica que falleci a la edad de tan slo 31 aos en 1893. Fue miembro del famoso "Grupo de los seis" que reuni a los msicos ms destacados de la poca. Escucharemos su obra ms famosa, el encantador "Vals Potico." Enrique Btiz dirige la Orquesta Festiva de Mxico.

For many years the Mexican pianist and conductor Enrique Btiz, has been the Director of the State of Mexico Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra's concert hall is named after Felipe Villanueva, a romantic-era Mexican composer who died at the young age of 31 in 1893. He was a member of the famous "Group of Six" that brought together the best-known musicians of the time. We'll hear his best-known work, the charming "Vals Potico" (poetic waltz). Enrique Btiz conducts the Festival Orchestra of Mexico.

Next, we'll hear a work by a contemporary composer. "Oceana" is a cantata for a solo singer, a double chorus that includes children's voices, and an orchestra that includes Latin American and African percussion instruments as well as an ensemble of amplified guitars and harp. The composer is Osvaldo Golijov, who was born in Argentina to eastern European parents and later moved to Israel and then to Massachusetts. The text comes from the poem "Cantos Ceremoniales" (ceremonial chants) by the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. It starts out with, "Oceana, bridal Oceana, hips of the islands, here by my side, sing to me the vanished chants, signs, numbers from the river of desire." We'll hear the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus directed by Robert Spano.

Esta prxima pieza del programa es verdaderamente internacional. El ttulo es alemn, el compositor es espaol, el solista es israel, el director de orquesta es alemn-americano y la orquesta es americana. En 1878, el compositor espaol y virtuoso del violn Pablo de Sarasate escribi quizs su obra ms famosa, Zigeunerweisen, que significa "Aires Gitanos" en alemn. This next piece on the program is truly international. The title is German, the composer is Spanish, the soloist is Israeli, the conductor is German-American and the orchestra is American. In 1878, the Spanish composer and violin virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate wrote perhaps his most famous work, Zigeunerweisen, which means "Gypsy airs" in German. It has long been a favorite among leading violinists, including the one we are about to hear, Itzhak (yihts-khahk) Perlman, accompanied by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Andre Previn.

Gabriela Lena Frank es una compositora joven que vive en el rea de la baha. Sus abuelos por parte de su madre vienen de Per y China, y su padre es de ascendencia lituana y juda. Ha viajado por todas partes en Latinoamrica para estudiar la poesa, los mitos folklricos, y los estilos musicales que pudieron ser incorporados a sus propias composiciones con el estilo de la msica occidental. En 2007 visit la isla Amantan ubicada en medio del lago Titicaca entre Per y Bolivia. La isla es tan bonita como espantosamente estril, lo que se refleja en esta obra emocionada y misteriosa, "Adagio para Amantan." Matt Walker toca el chelo con la misma Gabriela Lena Frank al piano.

Gabriela Lena Frank is a young composer living in the Bay area. Her mother is of mixed Peruvian and Chinese ancestry and her father is of Lithuanian-Jewish descent. She has traveled extensively throughout Latin America studying native folklore, poetry, mythology and musical styles that can be incorporated into a western musical framework in her own compositions. In 2007 she visited the island of Amantan in the middle of lake Titicaca between Per and Bolivia. The island is both beautiful and frighteningly barren, which is reflected in this emotional and mysterious work, "Adagio para Amantan," for cello and piano. The cellist is Matt Walker with Gabriela Lena Frank herself at the piano.

Una de las obras ms populares del repertorio clsico es el Concierto de Aranjuez, un concierto para guitarra de Joaqun Rodrigo. Rodrigo naci en 1901, se qued ciego a la edad de tres aos, y escribi el Concierto de Aranjuez en 1940, poco despus de la guerra civil espaola. El concierto lleva el nombre del hermoso palacio, ubicado entre Madrid y Toledo, y evoca el sentimiento de la vida de la corte de Aranjuez alrededor de finales del siglo 18. Escucharemos una interpretacin del guitarrista Narciso Yepes con la Orquesta Sinfnica de RTVE dirigida por Odn Alonso.

One of the most popular works in the classical repertoire is the Concierto de Aranjuez, the guitar concerto by Joaqun Rodrigo. Rodrigo was born in 1901, went blind at the age of three, and wrote the Concierto de Aranjuez in 1940, just after the Spanish civil war. The Concerto is named for the lovely palace located between Madrid and Toledo and evokes the feeling of court life at Aranjuez around the turn of the 19th century. We'll hear a performance by guitarist Narciso Yepes with the Symphony Orchestra of RTVE conducted by Odn Alonso

En 1954, el compositor venezolano Evencio Castellanos escribi una pieza llamada "Santa Cruz de Pacairigua" que rinde homenaje a la construccin de una iglesia cerca de Caracas, en Guatire. Esta msica de Castellanos cuenta la historia de una fiesta de San Pedro en la iglesia de Santa Cruz de Pacairigua. En esta grabacin, Gustavo Dudamel dirige la Orquesta Sinfnica de la Juventud Venezolana Simn Bolvar.

In 1954 the Venezuelan composer Evencio Castellanos wrote a piece called "Santa Cruz de Pacairigua," that pays homage to the construction of a church near Caracas in Guatire. Castellanos' music tells the story of the feast of San Pedro at the church of Santa Cruz de Pacairigua. We'll hear Gustavo Dudamel conducting the Simn Bolvar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela.

En el ao 1902, el compositor italiano Francesco Cilea introdujo si pera ms exitosa, "Adriana Lecouvrier", una pera con cuatro actos, ubicada en Paris del siglo 18. Escucharemos una aria de esta obra interpretada por la soprano espaola Montserrat Caball y la Orquesta Sinfnica de Barcelona dirigida por Gianfranco Masini.

In 1902, the Italian composer Francesco Cilea introduced his most successful opera, "Adriana Lecouvrier", a four-act opera set in 18th-century Paris. We'll hear an aria from this work performed by the Spanish soprano Montserrat Caball and the Symphony Orchestra of Barcelona conducted by Gianfranco Masini.

Sigue una pieza transcrita para un instrumento diferente. Se llama "Granada" del compositor espaol Isaac Albniz y fue escrito originariamente para piano, pero es mucho ms famosa en la versin transcrita para guitarra por Miguel Llobet y se ha hecho una de las obras ms importante del repertorio clsico para guitarra. Escucharemos una grabacin clsica del ao 1949 de Andrs Segovia.

Here's a piece that has been transcribed for a different instrument. It's called "Granada" by the Spanish composer Isaac Albniz and was originally written for piano, but it is far more famous in the transcription for guitar by Miguel Llobet and has become one of the most important works in the classical guitar repertoire. Here's a classic recording of it from 1949 by Andrs Segovia.
