Every week at this time we explore the musical culture of Spain and Latin America.]

Comencemos con un poco de msica clsica mesclada con el jazz. La pianista americana Helen Sung estudi y realiz entrenamiento en el estilo clsico, pero alrededor de los 20 aos de edad se inclin hacia la msica de jazz. La escucharemos interpretar una obra clsica, el "Capricho Cataln" de "Espaa" del compositor espaol Isaac Albniz, seguida por una composicin de ella de jazz "Capricho American", inspirada por la obra de Albniz. Interpreta la obra de Albniz al solo de piano y su propia composicin de jazz acompaada por su cuarteto de jazz con James Strickland en el saxofn, Ruben Rogers en el contrabajo, Nasheet Waits en la batera y Samuel Torres en la percusin.

Let's start off with a little classical music mixed with jazz. The American pianist Helen Sung was classically trained, but turned to jazz in her early 20s. We'll hear her play a classical work, the "Capricho Cataln" from "Espaa" by the Spanish composer Isaac Albniz followed by her jazz composition "Capricho American", which was inspired by the Albniz work. She plays the Albniz piece on piano solo and her jazz composition accompanied by her jazz quartet with James Strickland on saxophone, Ruben Rogers on the bass, Nasheet Waits on drums and Samuel Torres doing the percussion.

We just heard our first piece of the program, Helen Sung at the piano playing Capricho Catalan by Issac Albniz, and followed by Capricho American with a jazz interpretation by her quartet.

La msica del compositor de finales del siglo 20, Alberto Ginastera est empapada del espritu de la pampa Argentina. Su ballet "Estancia" est basado en el poema pico "Martn Fierro" de Jos Hernndez, que evoca la inmensidad inquietante del llano, la vida de trabajo duro del gaucho, sus pocos placeres, su msica y folklore, y su soledad. El ballet describe un da en la vida de los gauchos en una hacienda en la pampa. Hay un slo acto con 5 cuadros: El Amanecer, La Maana, La Tarde, La Noche, y otra vez El Amanecer. La directora uruguaya-americana-israel Gisele Ben-Dor dirige la Orquesta Sinfnica de Londres. El cantante y narrador es el argentino-italiano bajo-bartono Luis Gaeta.

The music of the 20th-century composer Alberto Ginastera is steeped in the spirit of the Argentinian pampas. His ballet "Estancia" is based on the epic poem "Martn Fierro" by Jos Hernndez, which evokes the eerie vastness of the plains, the gaucho's life of hard labor, his few joys, his music and folklore, and his solitude. The ballet depicts a day in the life of the gauchos on a cattle ranch on the pampas. There is one act with 5 scenes: Dawn, Morning, Afternoon, Night and Dawn the next day. The Uruguayan-American-Israeli conductor Gisele Ben-Dor leads the London Symphony Orchestra. The singer/narrator is the Argentinian-Italian bass-baritone Luis Gaeta.

Hacia finales del siglo 19, un joven msico espaol llamado Joaqun Turina entabl amistad con Manuel de Falla, cuya defensa de la msica espaola le afect profundamente. Turina escribi un par de zarzuelas que no tuvieron acogida, y despus se traslad a Paris en 1905, donde tuvo ms xito. Tras el encuentro con Falla e Isaac Albniz en Paris, los tres espaoles se dieron cuenta de que tenan que luchar valientemente por la msica nacional de su pas. Poco despus Turina ya haba escrito algunas obras de xito, incluso "La Procesin del Rocio," que estableci su reputacin en su propio pas cuando se estren en Madrid en 1913. Around the turn of the 20th century, a young Spanish musician named Joaqun Turina became friendly with Manuel de Falla, whose advocacy of Spanish music affected him deeply. Turina wrote a couple of zarzuelas that failed and then moved to Paris in 1905, where he had more success. Meeting with Falla and Isaac Albeniz in Paris, the three Spaniards realized that they had to fight bravely for the national music of their country. Before long Turina had written several successful works, including "La Procesin del Rocio" (Procession of the Pilgrimage) , which established his reputation in his own country when it was premiered in Madrid in 1913. In this performance, Jess Lpez-Cobos conducts the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.

Juan Orrego Salas es el compositor ms famoso de Chile. Sus Canciones Castellanas, introducidas en 1948, son entre sus xitos ms famosos. Fueron escritos para soprano y conjunto de cmara y evocan un pasado de Castilla basado en poemas por varios poetas espaoles. Las cinco canciones se llaman:

- Recurdate de mi vida
- Dicen que me case yo
- El Ganadico
- Ojos garos ha la nia
- Por do pasar esta sierra?

La soprano es Dorothy Renzi y el director del conjunto de camara es Arthur Winograd.

Juan Orrego Salas is Chile's most famous composer. His Canciones Castellanas (Castilian songs), introduced in 1948, are among his earliest successes. They are written for soprano and chamber ensemble and evoke a Castilian past, based on poems by various Spanish poets. The five songs are called:

- Remember my life
- They tell me to marry
- The little herd
- Heron's eyes the maid possesses
- By what road shall I cross this hill?

The soprano is Dorothy Renzi and the conductor of the chamber orchestra is Arthur Winograd.

El pianista chileno del siglo 20 Claudio Arrau es famoso por sus interpretaciones de un inmenso repertorio, desde el barroco hasta el moderno. Como muchos virtuosos, Arrau fue un nio prodigio, pero a diferencia de la mayora de ellos, nunca haba habido ningn msico profesional en su familia. A la edad de 4 aos estaba leyendo sonatas de Beethoven y dio su primer concierto un ao despus. A los 8 aos le enviaron para estudiar en Alemania con una beca de 10 aos del gobierno chileno. Sus primeras grabaciones estuvieron en rollos para piano, pero escucharemos una grabacin que hizo en 1986 directa a digital, de la sonata en do Kchel 309 de Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

The great 20th century Chilean pianist Claudio Arrau is known for his interpretations of a vast repertoire, ranging from the Baroque to modern composers. Like many virtuosos, Arrau was a child prodigy, but unlike most, there had never been a professional musician in his family. At the age of 4 he was reading Beethoven sonatas and he gave his first concert a year later. When he was 8 he was sent on a 10-year grant from the Chilean government to study in Germany. His first recordings were on piano rolls, but we'll hear a recording he made in 1986 direct to digital of the Sonata in C Kchel 309 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

En 1882, el compositor francs Emmanuel Chabrier pas 5 meses viajando por Espaa, escuchando la msica y danza que encontr en su viaje. Cuando regres a casa, arregl sus apuntes y escribi la obra de msica espaola ms famosa jams escrita por un compositor no espaol, la Rapsodia para orquesta "Espaa". Est interpretada aqu por la Orquesta Sinfnica de Londres, bajo la batuta del espaol, Atalfo Argenta.

In 1882, the French composer Emmanuel Chabrier spent 5 months touring around Spain, listening to the music and dance he encountered along the way. When he returned home he collected his notes and wrote the most famous Spanish music ever written by a non-Spanish composer, the Espaa Rhapsody. It is played here by the London Symphony Orchestra under the baton of the Spanish conductor Atalfo Argenta.
