Francisco Guerrero fue un renombrado compositor espaol del Renacimiento. Su msica se mantuvo popular durante siglos despus de su muerte, especialmente en las catedrales de Latinoamrica. Esta pieza, llamada, "Virgen Sancta," es interpretada por el Coro Hispano de San Francisco y el Conjunto Nuevo Mundo dirigidos por Juan Pedro Gaffney.

Francisco Guerrero was a noted Spanish composer of the Renaissance. His music remained popular for centuries after his death, especially in the cathedrals of Latin America. This piece called, "Virgen Sancta," is performed by the Coro Hispano de San Francisco and the Conjunto Nuevo Mundo conducted by Juan Pedro Gaffney.

Ahora, nos adelantaremos cuatro siglos. El director de orquesta y compositor contemporneo uruguayo Jos Serebrier fue un nio prodigio. Empez a dirigir cuando tena 11 aos y gan un concurso de composicin a la edad de 16. Poco despus escribi su primera sinfona mientras esperaba que diera comienzo a su primer ao de estudios en el Instituto Curtis de Filadelfia. La obra gan el premio BMI en 1956. Escucharemos al propio compositor dirigiendo la Orquesta Sinfnica de Bournemouth.

Now let's move forward four centuries. The contemporary Uruguayan conductor and composer Jos Serebrier was a child prodigy. He started conducting when he was 11 and won a composition contest when he was 16. Shortly thereafter he wrote his first symphony while waiting to start his first year of study at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. The work went on to win the BMI Award in 1956. We'll hear the composer himself conduct it now with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

A continuacin tenemos dos arias de la pera Lucia di Lammermoor del italiano Gaetano Donizetti. La segunda comienza con, "Tu che a dio spiegasti l'ali", que significa "Tu, que has desplegado las alas al cielo." En la pera, Lucia, embaucada por su hermano acepta un matrimonio sin amor, enloquece y asesina al novio. Cuando su engaado amante Edgardo descubre que Lucia tambin est muerta, canta que va a encontrarla en el cielo y se clava un cuchillo. Next we have two arias from the opera Lucia di Lammermoor by the Itanlian composer Gaetano Donizetti. The second begins with, "Tu che a dio spiegasti l'ali" (Too kay a deeo speeagasti lalee", which means "You, who have spread your wings up to the sky." In the opera, Lucia, duped by her brother into a loveless marriage, goes mad and murders the bridegroom. When her betrayed lover Edgardo finds out that Lucia herself is dead, he sings that he will join her in heaven and stabs himself. We'll hear the great Spanish tenor Alfredo Kraus with the Ambrosian Opera Chorus and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra directed by Nicola Rescigno.

Al mencionar la cancin "Sobre las olas" se piensa automticamente en el mar y su capacidad inspiradora. Pero resulta que el compositor mexicano Juventino Rosas escribi esa obra maestra despus de escuchar el murmullo de los manantiales de Contreras, que en su poca era un pequeo pueblo y hoy es un suburbio de la ciudad de Mxico. En esta grabacin La Orquesta Festival de Mxico es dirigida por Enrique Btiz.

The mention of the tune "Over the Waves" automatically brings to mind the sea and its capacity to inspire. However this masterwork of the Mexican composer Juventino Rosas was inspired by the murmur of a spring in Contreras, which was then a small town and is now a suburb of Mexico City. This recording is by the Festival Orchestra of Mexico conducted by Enrique Btiz.

La pianista cubana Juana Zayas fue una nia prodigio. Comenz a tocar canciones folklricas en el teclado de odo cuando slo tena dos aos. A la edad de 7 aos hizo su primer recital como solista, interpretando obras de Beethoven, Handel y Chopin. A sus 11 aos haba ganado la medalla de oro del Conservatorio Peyrellade en la Habana, en el concierto de Schumann. Cuando se gradu del "Conservatoire National Suprieur de Musique" en Paris emprendi una muy exitosa carrera como pianista. Sin embargo, la llegada rpidamente de tres nios le caus poner al lado su carrera por unos 15 aos mientras se concentr en su otra carrera de madre. En 1977 reapareci con reseas elogiosas y audiencias muy receptivas por todo el mundo. Aqu interpreta "Trois Nouvelles Etudes" de Frdric Chopin.

The Cuban pianist Juana Zayas was a child prodigy. She began to pick out folk tunes on the keyboard by ear when she was only two years old. At age 7 she gave her first solo recital, playing works by Beethoven, Handel and Chopin. By age 11 she had earned a gold medal at the Peyrellade Conservatory in Havana, performing the Schumann concerto. Upon graduation from the "Conservatoire National Suprieur de Musique" in Paris she embarked on a very successful performing career. However the arrival of three children in quick succession caused her to put her career on the back burner for about 15 years while she concentrated on her other career as a mother. In 1977 she re-emerged to glowing reviews and welcoming audiences all over the world. Here she is playing "Trois Nouvelles Etudes" by Frdric Chopin.

En 1965 el compositor argentino Carlos Guastavino escribi una pieza llamada "Jeromita Linares." Pertenece a una serie de obras llamada "Las presencias" que fueron retratos musicales de varias personas. El compositor mismo cuenta la historia que sigue: "Cuando nio, exista en mi pueblo una buena seora que viva en un ranchito muy humilde cubierto de flores y claveles, donde criaba algunas gallinas. All mi madre me enviaba a comprar huevos y, con mucha paciencia porque era muy corta de vista, esperaba a que la seora contara centavo por centavo para poder despedirme hasta el otro da. Se llamaba Jeromita; era espaola, sencilla y amable." Escucharemos a la Orquesta de Cmara "Camerata Bariloche" de Argentina.

In 1965 the Argentine composer Carlos Guastavino wrote a piece called "Jeromita Linares." It was one of a series of works called "Las presencias" which were musical portraits of various people. The composer himself tells the story, as follows: "When I was a boy, there was in my hometown a good lady who lived in a very humble house covered with flowers and carnations, where she raised a few hens. My mother would send me daily to her place to buy eggs and, since she was very shortsighted, I had to wait patiently until she counted the money, cent by cent, before I could say good-bye until the following day. Her name was Jeromita; she was Spanish, simple and kind." We'll hear the Camerata Bariloche Chamber Orchestra of Argentina.

En 1935, junto con Blas Galindo, Daniel Ayala y Pablo Moncayo, el mexicano Salvador Contreras cre el famoso "Grupo de los cuatro," destinado a ejecutar la msica de autores mexicanos que combinaran tcnicas modernas con estilstica mexicana. Contreras fue director de orquesta, violinista y compositor. Estas cuatro canciones son un buen ejemplo de su intento de incluir msica mexicana en sus composiciones. Las primeras dos tienen letra de Daniel Castaeda. Los ttulos son "Se despereza el Indio" y "Cuando el tecolote canta." Las segundas dos canciones tienen letra de Juan Manuel Ruiz Esparza, con ttulos "Dame Creador un tomo" y "Avestruz africano." La soprano Mara Teresa Uribe est acompaada por Balsz Szokolay al piano.

In 1935, along with Blas Galindo, Daniel Ayala and Pablo Moncayo, the Mexican Salvador Contreras created the famous "Group of Four" destined to perform the music of Mexican composers which combined modern techniques with Mexican stylistics. Contreras was a conductor, violinist and composer. These four songs are a good example of his conscious endeavor to include Mexican music in his compositions. The first two are based on words by Daniel Castaeda. The titles are "Se despereza el Indio" (The Indian stretches) and "Cuando el tecolote canta" (When the owl sings). The second two songs are based on words by Juan Manuel Ruiz Esparza, with titles of "Dame Creador un tomo" (Give me an atom, Creator) and "Avestruz africano" (African ostrich). Soprano Mara Teresa Uribe is accompanied by Balsz Szokolay on the piano.

Carlos Chvez, que vivi entre 1899 y 1978 fue el hombre que llev Mxico al mundo de la msica moderna. Uno de los mejores ejemplos de ello es "Caballos de Vapor" (tambin conocida como H. P. por las siglas de "Horse Power" en ingls). Esta suite viene de un ballet del mismo nombre e intenta pintar el contraste entre las tierras frtiles y productivas del sur de Mxico y el norte fro e industrial. Hay tres secciones llamadas "Danza del Hombre", "Barco hacia el Trpico" y "El Trpico". Escucharemos a la Orquesta Sinfnica Simn Bolvar de Venezuela bajo la batuta de Eduardo Mata.

Carlos Chvez, who lived from 1899 to 1978, was the man who brought Mexico into the world of modern music. Caballos de Vapor (also known as H.P. for Horse Power, it's English title), provides one of the best examples of that. This suite comes from a ballet of the same name and is intended to depict the contrast between the fertile and productive lands of the south of Mexico and the cold. industrial north. There are three sections called "Dance of Man", "Boat to the Tropics" and "The Tropics" We'll hear the Simn Bolvar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela under the baton of Eduardo Mata.
