Agustn Barrios naci en Paraguay y falleci en San Salvador en 1944. Su xito como guitarrista por toda Sudamrica le hizo un hroe nacional. Comenz interpretando en la guitarra de joven y pronto se hizo virtuoso. Para incrementar las capacidades de su instrumento escogido, con frecuencia sintonizaba las dos cuerdas ms bajas un tono abajo de lo normal y tambin utilizaba cuerdas de acero en lugar de la tripa ms normal. La "Suite Andina" es una de sus obras ms popular. Escucharemos el movimiento llamado "Aconquija" interpretada por Laurindo Almeida.

Agustn Barrios was born in Paraguay and died in San Salvador in 1944. His success as a guitarist throughout South America made him a great national figure. He began playing the guitar as a young boy and quickly became a virtuoso. To expand the capabilities of his chosen instrument, he frequently tuned the two lowest strings a whole tone below the normal tuning and also used steel strings instead of the usual gut. The "Suite Andina" is one of his most popular works. We'll hear the movement called "Aconquija" performed by Laurindo Almeida.

Nacido en Espaa, el compositor Julin Orbn escap a Cuba con su familia en la dcada de 1930 cuando era joven. En 1945 gan un concurso de composicin para estudiar bajo el compositor americano Aaron Copland, que le llam "el mejor dotado compositor de la nueva generacin de Cuba." Se sabe que normalmente un concierto (o concerto en italiano) es una obra para un solo instrumento, acompaado por una orquesta. Sin embargo, in su "Concerto Grosso para Cuarteto de Cuerdas y Orquesta Sinfnica", Orbn trata todo un cuarteto de cuerdas como solista. Esta interpretacin es por la Orquesta Sinfnica Simn Bolvar de Venezuela dirigida por el mexicano Eduardo Mata.

The Spanish-born composer Julin Orbn escaped to Cuba with his family in the 1930s when he was still a young boy. In 1945 he won a composition contest to study under the American composer Aaron Copland, who once called him, "Cuba's most gifted composer of the new generation." Now, normally a concerto is a work for a solo instrument accompanied by an orchestra. However, in Orbon's "Concerto Grosso for String Quartet and Orchestra", he does something almost unique: he treats an entire string quartet as the soloist. This recording is by the Simon Bolvar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, led by Mexican conductor Eduardo Mata.

La "Ave Mara" es una oracin tradicional catlica que ha sido escrito en una partitura musical muchas veces por muchos compositores. Una de las ms famosas es del compositor francs Charles Gounod, basada en un preludio de Johann Sebastian Bach. Escucharemos una interpretacin del tenor peruano Juan Diego Flrez, con la Orquesta del Teatro Comunale di Bologna dirigida por Michele Mariotti.

The "Ave Maria" is a traditional Catholic prayer that has been set to music many times by many different composers. One of the most famous is by the French composer Charles Gounod, based on a prelude by Johann Sebastian Bach. We'll hear a performance by the Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flrez, with the Orquesta del Teatro Comunale di Bologna conducted by Michele Mariotti.

El compositor vasco de principios del siglo 20, Jess Guridi es ms conocido por sus zarzuelas y su msica para rgano, pero en verdad comenz su carrera como pianista y escribi abundante msica importante para ese instrumento. Aunque fue influenciado por la msica romntica de Richard Wagner, tambin tuvo inspiracin de la msica folklrica de su pas. Un buen ejemplo es esta suite de tres piezas para piano sobre temas populares vascos llamada "Vasconia". Las tres secciones se llaman "Viejo carilln", "Leyenda" y "En el chacol". La pianista es Ana Vega-Toscano.

The early 20th century Spanish Basque composer Jess Guridi is perhaps best known for his zarzuelas and his organ music, but he actually started out his career as a pianist and wrote much important music for that instrument. While he was influenced by the Romantic music of Richard Wagner he also found inspiration in the folk music of his native land. A good example is this suite of three piano pieces on popular Basque themes called "Vasconia". The three sections are called "Viejo carilln" (Old bell), "Leyenda" (Legend) and "En el chacol". The pianist is Ana Vega-Toscano.

Comenceremos la segunda hora del programa con msica del siglo 18. Manuel de Zumaya naci alrededor del ao 1678 en Nueva Espaa, el actual Mxico, de ascendencia indgena y europea. En 1715 fue nombrado uno de los primeros americanos en ascender al rango alto de Maestro de Capilla, en la ciudad de Mxico y en Oaxaca. Escribi la Cantata de Navidad "Alegres luces del da" que fue descubierta en los archivos de la Catedral de Oaxaca. Muestra signos del nuevo estilo italiano que empezaba a ser popular en aquel entonces con un aria da capo, un recitativo, y agregando violines al conjunto instrumental. Escucharemos a la soprano Carol Ann Allred con Chatham Baroque.

Let's begin the second hour of the program with music of the 18th century. Manuel de Zumaya was born around 1678 in New Spain, in what is now Mexico, of mixed indigenous and European ancestry. In 1715 he became one of the first Americans to ascend to the high rank of Chapel Master, in Mexico City and Oaxaca. He wrote the Christmas Cantata "Alegres luces del da", which was discovered in the archives of Oaxaca Cathedral. It shows signs of the new Italian style that was becoming popular at the time with a da capo aria, recitative and the addition of violins to the instrumental ensemble. We'll hear soprano Carol Ann Allred with Chatham Baroque.

Ahora, avancemos unos tres siglos. Gabriela Ortiz es una compositora mexicana contempornea. En sus propias palabras, "El ttulo de esta obra es una evocacin del legendario Papalopan "Ro de las Mariposas", cuyas mrgenes alcanzan al puerto fluvial de Tlacotalpan, Veracruz, donde de nia y adolescente conoc las sones regionales, adems de haberlos escuchado otras tantas veces. Imgenes y recuerdos de aquellos viajes son los que nutren mi deseo de explorar y jugar de una manera simple y personal con todos estos tejidos contrapuntsticos, rtmicos y meldicos que se dan de forma natural en una msica tan rica y llena de tradicin. Por otra parte, tambin he querido enfocar al arpa no solo dentro del contexto de la msica occidental europea, sino como un instrumento que siempre ha estado ligado a nuestras races." Escucharemos a las arpistas Alison Bjorkedal y Allison Allport con Lynn Vartan en la percusin.

Now let's move ahead about three centuries. Gabriela Ortiz is a contemporary Mexican composer. In her own words, "The title of this piece is inspired by the legendary Mexican River Papalopan, or best known as "River of the Butterflies". The town of Tlacotlalpan located in the state of Veracruz, with its port on the river Papalopan, is where as a child and teenager I discovered the local folk music played so many times. Images and memories of those journeys are the ones that fed my desire to explore and play with musical material in a very simple and personal way. Furthermore, I also liked to focus on the harp, not only within the context of occidental European music, but as an instrument that has always been linked to our roots. We'll hear the harpists Alison Bjorkedal and Allison Allport with Lynn Vartan on the steel drum.

El director de orquesta y compositor mexicano Eduardo Mata dirigi la Orquesta Sinfnica de Dallas desde 1977 hasta 1993, el tiempo ms largo que ningn otro Director de Msica. Durante esta poca grabaron gran parte del repertorio clsico estndar. Esta grabacin del ao 1980 es el Concierto para piano no. 22 en mi bemol de Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart con Emanuel Ax al piano. La cadencia es por el propio Seor Ax.

The Mexican conductor and composer Eduardo Mata led the Dallas Symphony Orchestra from 1977 to 1993, the longest tenure of any of its Music Directors. During that time they recorded much of the standard classical repertoire. This recording from 1980 is of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Piano Concerto number 22 in E flat with Emanuel Ax on the piano. The cadenza is by Mr. Ax himself.
