Let's start off the program with music from Africa. This is a traditional Nigerian song called "Keresimesi 'dun De O" (Christmas has come, alleluya!). It is performed by the Coro Hispano de San Francisco and the Conjunto Nuevo Mundo directed by Juan Pedro Gaffney.

Para muchos de ustedes, "Zarzuela" es solamente una palabra difcil de pronunciar. Pero, para el famoso tenor opertico Plcido Domingo, es la nana que oa cantar a sus padres cuando estaba en la cuna, ya que ambos eran cantantes de esta tradicional msica de teatro espaola. En 1946, cuando Plcido tena 5 aos, viajaron a Amrica con la compaa de Federico Moreno Torroba. Disfrutaron del reconocimiento del pblico en Espaa y Latinoamrica, muy especialmente en Mxico donde decidieron formar su propia compaa. De sus padres, aprendi toda la responsabilidad del teatro as como un profundo amor y devocin por la escena. En esta grabacin, regresa a sus races cantando dos arias de la Zarzuela "Los gavilanes" de Jacinto Guerrero, llamadas "Mi aldea" y "Flor roja". Est acompaado por el Coro Titular del Teatro Lrico Nacional y la Orquesta Sinfnica de Madrid dirigidos por Manuel Moreno-Torroba.

For many of you, "Zarzuela" is just a difficult word to pronounce. But, for the famous operatic tenor Plcido Domingo, it is the lullaby he heard his mother and father sing as he lay in his crib, as they were both great singers of this traditional Spanish theater music. In 1946, when Plcido was 5 years old, they travelled with the company of Federico Moreno Torroba. They enjoyed recognition from the public in Spain and Latin America - most especially in Mexico, where they formed their own company. From his parents, he learned all the responsibility of the theater and a deep love for and devotion to the stage. In this recording, he returns to his roots singing two arias from the Zarzuela "Los gavilanes" (The Sparrowhawks) by Jacinto Guerrero, called "Mi aldea" (My Village) and "Flor roja" (Red Flower). He is accompanied by the Principal Chorus of the National Lyric Theater and the Madrid Symphony Orchestra conducted by Manuel Moreno-Torroba.

El compositor espaol del siglo 20 Federico Moreno Torroba fue el primer no guitarrista en componer para el instrumento. Su "Sonatina", una sonata corta, era un favorito especial del compositor francs Maurice Ravel. Escucharemos una interpretacin del guitarrista Andrs Segovia.

The 20th-century Spanish composer Federico Moreno Torroba was the first non-guitarist to compose for the instrument. His "Sonatina", or short sonata, was a special favorite of the French composer Maurice Ravel. We'll hear a rendition by guitarist Andrs Segovia.

El gran pianista chileno del siglo 20 Claudio Arrau es famoso por sus interpretaciones de un repertorio inmenso, desde el barroco hasta el moderno. Como muchos virtuosos, Arrau fue un nio prodigio, pero a diferencia de la mayora de ellos, nunca haba habido ningn msico profesional en su familia. A la edad de 4 aos estaba leyendo sonatas de Beethoven y dio su primer concierto un ao despus. A los 8 aos le enviaron para estudiar en Alemania con una beca de 10 aos del gobierno chileno. Sus primeras grabaciones estuvieron en rollos de piano, pero escucharemos una grabacin que hizo en 1986 directa a digital, de la sonata en la de Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

The great 20th century Chilean pianist Claudio Arrau is known for his interpretations of a vast repertoire, ranging from the Baroque to modern composers. Like many virtuosos, Arrau was a child prodigy, but unlike most, there had never been a professional musician in his family. At the age of 4 he was reading Beethoven sonatas and he gave his first concert a year later. When he was 8 he was sent on a 10-year grant from the Chilean government to study in Germany. His first recordings were on piano rolls, but we'll hear a recording he made in 1986 direct to digital of the Sonata in A by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

En 1934, Silvestre Revueltas compuso la partitura para un documental sobre varios aspectos de la vida y paisaje mexicana. Al principio llev el ttulo "Pescados" pero finalmente la pelcula estren en 1936 con el ttulo "Redes." Fue un fracaso de taquilla pero con tiempo se hizo un clsico del cine, gracias en gran parte a la partitura impactante de Revueltas, lo que ms tarde arregl como suite de concierto. Escucharemos una interpretacin del maestro mexicano Eduardo Mata, dirigiendo La Orquesta Sinfnica Simn Bolvar de Venezuela.

In 1934 Silvestre Revueltas composed the score for a documentary film about various aspects of Mexican life and landscape. Originally titled "Pescados" (Fish), the film finally premiered in 1936 with the title "Redes" (Nets). It was a flop at the box office, but in time it became recognized as a classic, helped in no small part by Revueltas' powerful score, which he later arranged as a concert suite. We'll hear a performance by the Mexican conductor Eduardo Mata, leading the Simn Bolvar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela.

En 1867, el compositor francs Camille Saint-Sans escribi una composicin para violn y orquesta basada en el ritmo habanero. La escribi para el violinista espaol Diaz Albertini. El solista en esta grabacin es Itzhak Perlman con la Orquesta Filarmnica de Nueva York dirigida por Zubin Mehta.

In 1867, the French composer Camille Saint-Sans wrote a composition for violin and orchestra based on the habanera rhythm. He wrote it for the Spanish violinist Diaz Albertini. The soloist on this recording is Itzhak Perlman with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Zubin Mehta.

A continuacin tenemos una cancin mexicana tradicional con una interpretacin no muy tradicional. Es un son Huasteco llamado "El Llorar" interpretada por el Cuarteto Kronos con vocalistas Efrn Vargas y Alejandro Flores que tambin toca el violn.

Here's a traditional Mexican song with a very non-traditional interpretation. It's an old Huastecan song called "El Llorar" (Crying) and is performed by the Kronos Quartet with vocalists Efrn Vargas and Alejandro Flores, who also plays the violin.

Ludwig van Beethoven escribi su tercera sonata para chelo en 1808, el mismo ao en el que escribi sus quinta y sexta sinfonas. Fue la primera sonata para chelo que dio partes igualmente importantes tanto al chelo como al piano. Uno de los chelistas ms famosos de la era moderna fue el espaol Pablo Casals. Tenemos a continuacin una grabacin clsica del ao 1930 de la Sonata nmero 3 en la mayor de Beethoven con Pablo Casals acompaado por Otto Schulhoff al piano.

Ludwig van Beethoven wrote his third cello sonata in 1808, the same year he wrote his fifth and sixth symphonies. It was the first cello sonata in history that gave equally-important parts to both the cello and the piano. One of the most famous cellists of the modern era was the Spaniard Pablo Casals. Here he is in a classic recording from 1930 playing the Beethoven Cello Sonata number 3 in A accompanied by Otto Schulhof on the piano.
