Let's start off the program with music from Catalonia. Jos Antonio Zulaica y Arregui was a Franciscan friar who lived from 1886 to 1956. In accordance with a custom of the order, he adopted the name of his native town in the Basque region of Spain and so was called "Aita Donostia" (Father Donostia). He was the world's foremost authority on the folk music of the Basques, and for many years he roamed the countryside searching out and writing down their beautiful songs. Among his own compositions are the four books of Basque Preludes for piano. Common to all of them is a concern for the strict reproduction of the traditional melodies, which are always allowed to shine through. We'll hear the preludes numbers 5 to 8, called "Children's Dances", "Grief", "Grandfather's Tale" and "Shepherd-boy's Song." At the piano is Jordi Mas.

Back in 2004, the Mexican composer Enrico Chapela wanted to write a work that would pay homage to Mexican composer Carlos Chvez and the nationalist movement. But he concluded that it shouldn't be just a rehash of indigenous themes as was done in the first half of the 20th century. He decided that a better contemporary expression of nationalism would be a victory for the national soccer team. So he based his symphonic poem, "nguesu" on the foul language and insults yelled out by Mexican fans at the FIFA Confederations Cup final on August 4th 1999, when Mexico beat Brazil. The Mexican team is represented by the woodwinds, the Brazilians by the brass, the benches by percussion, the crowd by the strings, and the referee by the conductor. We'll hear the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas conducted by Alondra de la Parra.

The French composer and music critic Gustave Samazeuilh studied composition with Chausson, d'Indy and Dukas. His "Serenade" for guitar is an adept and good-humored compendium of typical elements of "Spanish" guitar writing in its color, rhythm, ornamental figuration and timbre. One is tempted to say that no born Spaniard could have written a more Spanish piece. He dedicated it to Andrs Segovia, who performs it for us now.
