Comenzaremos el programa con un adagio sobre melodas hebreas de Max Bruch llamada "Kok Nidrei". La primera meloda viene de una oracin que se recita como parte del Yom Kippur llamado "Kok Nidrei" que significa "Todos los votos" en hebreo. El segundo tema que se cita en un arreglo de Isaac Nathan es de un texto de Lord Byron dentro de una coleccin llamada "Melodas Hebreas." Escucharemos una interpretacin clsica del chelista Pablo Casals con la Orquesta Sinfnica de Londres, del ao 1936 realizada en los legendarios estudios de "Abbey Road". El director es Sir Landon Ronald.

We start off the program with an adagio on Hebrew melodies by Max Bruch called "Kok Nidrei". The first melody comes from a prayer recited as part of Yom Kippur called "Kok Nidrei", which means "all vows" in Hebrew. The second subject is quoted from an arrangement by Isaac Nathan of a lyric by Lord Byron from a collection called "Hebrew Melodies." We'll hear a classic performance from 1936 made in the legendary "Abbey Road" studios by cellist Pablo Casals with the London Symphony Orchestra, led by Sir Landon Ronald.

La zarzuela es un tipo de pera ligera muy importante en la historia de Espaa y sigue siendo popular hoy da. Hay dos formas de zarzuela, el "Genero chico" y el "Genero grande" que es ms parecido a una pera italiana de envergadura. Francisco Asenjo Barbieri es considerado como el creador del gnero chico. Escucharemos un ejemplo llamado "El noble gremio de costureras" de la zarzuela "El barberillo de Lavapies" con la soprano Mara Jos Suarez y la Orquesta y Coro de la Comunidad de Madrid dirigidos por Miguel Roa.

The zarzuela is the light opera style that was very important in the history of Spain and is still popular today. There are two forms of zarzuela, the "Gnero chico" (little genre) and "Gnero grande" which is more like a full-fledged Italian opera. Francisco Asenjo Barbieri is recognized as the creator of the gnero chico. We'll hear an example called "El noble gremio de costureras" (The noble guild of seamstresses) from the zarzuela "El barberillo de Lavapies"(The little barber of Lavapies) with soprano Mara Jos Suarez and the Comunidad de Madrid Orchestra and Chorus under the direction of Miguel Roa.

A continuacin tenemos una composicin annima de Bolivia escrita en la era barroca. El manuscrito fue descubierto recientemente en la antigua misin jesuita de los Moxos, un grupo indgena boliviano. Se llama, "Sonata Chiquitana" por el nombre de uno de los idiomas indgenas en el rea. Este disco fue grabado en el 2004 en el medio de la selva boliviana por Florilegium, un grupo britnico de instrumentos antiguos.

Next is an anonymous composition from Bolivia written in the baroque era. The manuscript was recently discovered in the former Jesuit mission of the Moxos Indians. It is called "Sonata Chiquitana" after one of the native languages in the area. This recording was made in 2004 in the middle of the Bolivian jungle by the British period instrument ensemble Florilegium.

El director de orquesta venezolano Jos Serebrier tambin es un compositor. Vamos a or su obra "Variaciones sobre un tema de la niez" estrenada en esta grabacin con el mismo Serebrier dirigiendo la Orquesta Nacional de Cmara de Toulouse. El solista en el fagot es Laurent de Chennadec.

The Venezuelan conductor Jos Serebrier is also a composer. We will now hear his "Variations on a theme from Childhood" in this world-premier recording with Serebrier himself conducting the Toulouse National Chamber Orchestra. The bassoon soloist is Laurent de Chennadec.

Mijal Glinka, que vivi entre 1804 y 1857, fue el primer famoso compositor ruso y se considera la fuente principal de la msica clsica rusa. A los 13 aos, recibi lecciones del compositor irlands John Field, quien estaba de viaje en San Petersborgo en aqul entonces. John Field fue el creador del "nocturno" una composicin musical romntica inspirada por la noche en la que tpicamente destaca una meloda cantable. Escucharemos un nocturno de Mijal Glinka transcrito para arpa e interpretado por el arpista espaol Nicanor Zabaleta.

Mikhail Glinka, who lived from 1804 to 1857, was the first famous Russian composer and is regarded as the fountainhead of Russian classical music. At age 13 he took piano lessons from the Irish composer John Field, who was visiting St. Petersburg at the time. John Field was the originator of the "nocturne" a romantic musical composition inspired by the night that typically features a song-like melody. We'll now hear a nocturne by Mikhail Glinka transcribed for harp and performed by the Spanish harpist Nicanor Zabaleta.

La pianista cubana Juana Zayas fue una nia prodigio. Comenz a tocar de odo canciones folklricas en el teclado cuando slo tena dos aos. A la edad de 7 aos hizo su primer recital como solista, interpretando obras de Beethoven, Handel y Chopin. A sus 11 aos haba ganado la medalla de oro del Conservatorio Peyrellade en la Habana, con el concierto de Schumann. Cuando se gradu del "Conservatoire National Suprieur de Musique" en Paris emprendi una muy exitosa carrera como pianista. Sin embargo, la rpida llegada de tres nios le hizo dejar a un lado su carrera por unos 15 aos mientras se concentraba en su otra carrera de madre. En 1977 reapareci recibiendo reseas muy elogiosas y una muy buena acogida por todo el mundo. Aqu interpreta el Nocturno en do menor, opus 48 nmero 1 de Frdric Chopin.

The Cuban pianist Juana Zayas was a child prodigy. She began to pick out folk tunes on the keyboard by ear when she was only two years old. At age 7 she gave her first solo recital, playing works by Beethoven, Handel and Chopin. By age 11 she had earned a gold medal at the Peyrellade Conservatory in Havana, performing the Schumann concerto. Upon graduation from the Conservatoire National Suprieur de Musique in Paris she embarked on a successful performing career. However the arrival of three children in quick succession caused her to put her career on the back burner for about 15 years while she concentrated on her other career as a mother. In 1977 she re-emerged to glowing reviews and welcoming audiences all over the world. Here she is playing the Nocturne in C minor, Op. 48 No. 1 by Frdric Chopin.

El compositor alemn Robert Schumann fue uno de los gigantes de la poca romntica. En 1847, cuando escribi su Trio para Piano nmero 1 a la edad de 37 aos, ya haba compuesto varias otras obras de cmara, dos sinfonas, un concierto para piano, canciones "lieder", y muchas composiciones para piano. Sin embargo, en un periodo de siete aos se haba vuelto demente y l mismo se hizo internar en un manicomio donde muri trgicamente tres aos despus, a los 46 aos. Pero escucharemos esta obra escrita en sus tiempos ms felices, el Trio No. 1 en re menor, Opus 63, interpretado por el pianista Arthur Rubenstein, el violinista polaco-mexicano Henryk Szeryng y Pierre Fournier en el chelo.

The German composer Robert Schumann was one of the giants of the Romantic era. By 1847, when he wrote his Piano Trio number one at age 37, he had already written several other chamber works, two symphonies, a piano concerto, lieder songs, and many compositions for piano. An yet, within seven years he had gone mad and admitted himself to an insane asylum where he tragically died three years later at age 46. But let's listen to music written in happier days, the Trio No. 1 in D minor, Opus 63, performed by pianist Arthur Rubenstein, the Polish-Mexican violinist Henryk Szeryng and Pierre Fournier on cello.

El ttulo de la prxima obra del programa es un nombre compuesto. En 1990 el compositor puertorriqueo Roberto Sierra escribi una pieza para el 50 aniversario de la Sinfnica de San Antonio, dedicada al Maestro Zdenek Macal. As que tom "SA" de "San Antonio", "SI" de su propio nombre "Sierra" y "MA" del apellido de Macal para formar la sigla "SASIMA". Escucharemos una interpretacin con Maestro Macal dirigiendo la Orquesta Sinfnica de Milwaukee.

The title of the next work on the program is an acronym. In 1990, Puerto Rican composer Roberto Sierra wrote a piece for the 50th anniversary of the San Antonio Symphony dedicated to Maestro Zdenek Macal. So he took "SA" from "San Antonio", "SI" from his own name "Sierra" and "MA" from Macal's last name to form the acronym "SASIMA". We'll hear a performance with Maestro Macal conducting the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra.

De msica del siglo 20 retrocedamos unos 7 siglos a la poca del Rey Alfonso dcimo el Sabio. Fue rey de Castilla entre 1252 y 1284. Estableci el castellano como un idioma de sabidura superior y fue un poeta destacado que escribi obras tales como "Cantigas de Santa Mara" para las que tambin escribi la msica. A continuacin tenemos un arreglo para guitarra de unos de los poemas por Narciso Yepes.

From music of the 20th century let's move back about 7 centuries to the time of King Alfonso the tenth, "the Wise". He was the king of Castile from 1252 to 1284. Alfonso established Castilian as the language of higher learning and was a noted poet who wrote such works as "Cantigas de Santa Mara" for which he also wrote the music. Here is an arrangement for guitar of one of the poems by Narciso Yepes.

Desde hace muchos aos el director de orquesta y pianista mexicano Enrique Btiz ha sido el Director de la Orquesta Sinfnica del Estado de Mxico. La sala de conciertos de la orquesta lleva el nombre de Felipe Villanueva, un compositor mexicano de la era romntica que falleci a la edad de tan slo 31 aos en 1893. Fue miembro del famoso "Grupo de los seis" que reuni a los msicos ms destacados de la poca. Escucharemos su obra ms famosa, el encantador "Vals Potico." Enrique Btiz dirige la Orquesta Festiva de Mxico.

For many years the Mexican pianist and conductor Enrique Btiz, has been the Director of the State of Mexico Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra's concert hall is named after Felipe Villanueva, a romantic-era Mexican composer who died at the young age of 31 in 1893. He was a member of the famous "Group of Six" that brought together the best-known musicians of the time. We'll hear his best-known work, the charming "Vals Potico" (poetic waltz). Enrique Btiz conducts the Festival Orchestra of Mexico.
