Let's start off the program with music from Mexico. Ricardo Castro, born in 1864, was his generation's most remarkable composer. He was director of Mexico's National Conservatory and established the Mexican Philharmonic Society to promote his contemporaries' chamber music. In his "Vals capricho" Opus 1, there is a dramatic introduction, typically romantic in its rhetoric, in which a rich harmonic interplay can be detected. Specially interesting in this famous piece are the transitions between episodes of the waltz. It is played here by the harp duo of Mercedes Gmez and Janet Paulus.

The Spanish-Catalan pianist Alicia de Larrocha was one of the great piano legends of the 20th century. She began studying the piano at the age of 3 and gave her first public performance when she was only 5 years old. Despite being less than 5 feet tall and with small hands for a pianist, she was able to tackle all the big concertos. She is best known for her interpretations of the music of her fellow countrymen such as Manuel de Falla, Enrique Granados, Federico Mompou and Isaac Albniz, but in fact she had a broad repertoire. We'll now hear her playing Franz Josef Haydn's Concerto in D major, with the London Sinfonietta conducted by David Zinman.

I have an interesting disc that is a collaboration between several choral groups: the Ensemble Elyma, Ars Longa of Havana, and Cor Vivaldi. What they have attempted to do is to reconstruct in sonic terms a fiesta, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, in the city of La Plata, now known as Sucre, in Bolivia. They have brought together a number of pieces by various composers of the period and placed them in the order in which you would have heard them if you had been there on feast day of 1718. We don't have time to hear the whole disc but let's listen to the first two sections, "Procession of the entrance to the Cathedral: Vespers" and "First salutation: the angelic choirs". The composers are Francisco Correa de Arauxo, Roque Jacinto de Chavarra, Andrs Flores, and an anonymous composer of Sucre.

Next we have a piece by the 20th-century Venezuelan composer and musician Antonio Lauro. Today Lauro is mainly known for his guitar compositions, such as the one we will now hear, "Pavana al estilo de los vihuelistas", a pavanne written in the style of the vihuela, a guitar-like instrument of 15th and 16th-century Spain. The piece was a tribute to the 16th-century Spanish composer Luis Miln. We'll hear it performed by Victor Villadangos on the guitar.

One of the many foreign composers who have composed music in the Spanish style was the Russian Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov. His original idea for his work "Capriccio Espagnol" was to write a virtuoso fantasy on Spanish themes for violin and orchestra. Traces of this design are abundant in the many virtuoso solo passages, not only for the leading violin but also for various wind instruments. Rimsky-Korsakov had spent only three days in Spain as a youth and readily admitted that, for all the attraction of Spanish melodic and rhythmic figures, the Capriccio was a "purely external" work. We'll hear an interpretation by the London Symphony Orchestra under the baton of the Spanish conductor Ataulfo Argenta.

The final piece of the program is also the final piece for guitar by the Spanish composer Joaqun Turina. "Homenaje a Trrega," written in 1932, pays tribute to the eminent guitarist and composer Francisco Trrega, who standardized the modern technique of the classical guitar. Paradoxically, Turina borrows two flamenco rhythms to achieve his goal, the "Garrotn" and the "Soleares," a piece which, through its rhythms, suggests the subtle interaction between singer and accompanist in this flamenco form. We'll hear an interpretation by Narciso Yepes.
